      Alchemy Classic

Alchemy Classic is a Debian-based arcade operating system designed for Raspberry Pi 3A+ hardware and newer. It is built specifically for classic arcade games, with an emphasis on fast startup, responsive controls, and straightforward configuration.

Alchemy Classic is not intended to support dozens of home-console emulators. It is designed around AdvanceMAME and focuses on providing accurate, dependable emulation for supported classic arcade games.

      Why I Built Alchemy Classic

I originally built Arcade Alchemy for my own use. I wanted a system that could boot directly into one dedicated game while still providing the option to exit to a simple menu and select from a small collection of additional games.

I also wanted a system that would boot quickly, without the unnecessary delays, startup screens, menus, and background processes found in many Raspberry Pi-based arcade systems.

Alchemy Classic includes dedicated GPIO control inputs and an MP3 jukebox feature for playing music while the cabinet is idle. It also includes conveniences such as the optional Player Two double-tap coin function, allowing credits to be added without repeatedly using a coin switch.

For users who prefer the complete arcade experience, a physical coin door can still be connected through the available GPIO coin input.

Alchemy Classic was designed and tested primarily for classic games from the 1980s. Standard joystick-and-button games are generally well supported. Games with unusual controls or complex hardware configurations may require additional setup and can vary in compatibility.
